Creepy portraits and family photos found in English mansion abandoned 30 years ago

Creepy portraits and family photos have been found in a mansion which was abandoned 30 years ago.

Urban explorer Colin Smith, 36, made the discovery in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, while driving home from a job.

The former plumber from Hampshire – known on YouTube as ‘The Bearded Explorer’ – spotted the long overgrown driveway of a mansion and decided to find out more about it.

Inside the property, which dates back to the 1930s, Colin found photos, books and newspapers.

Footage from inside the property shows a cellar, a kitchen in a state of decay and some creepy portraits.

It is not clear why the house was abandoned, but sell-by dates on food items seem to show it has been empty for about 30 years.

The photos also showed the former servant quarters, and a bell system where owners could ring the servants, who resided in their own quarters, for assistance.

Silver-plated cutlery, a grand piano and newspapers dating back to 1954 lie strewn across the property.

Colin said finding similar properties can be bittersweet because in a way he is thrilled, but he also feels upset to see such incredible homes fall from their former glory.

The urban explorer explained: “I came across this amazing house completely by accident.

“I was driving in the area for a job when I noticed the stunning architecture which really drew me in.

“I dropped a pin in the map on my phone and then a few days later I went back with my girlfriend and my mate and we had a look round.

“Normally these chance discoveries tend to be the better ones for urban explorers as the chances are that no one has been there yet.”

He added: “It was quite creepy because it was so dark and the house was so big.

“It didn’t look as if it had fallen into a dangerous state of repair.”

Colin believes the mansion may have been sold to a property tycoon who eventually did not renovate it.

He added: “When I put a torch in a room and realised just how big it was with the tall ceilings, it was really unexpected.

“The attention to detail in every room was incredible. They must’ve spent an absolute fortune doing it up.

“One of the most interesting finds was the bell system in the hallway and kitchen. Each room had its own bell which linked up to the kitchen.”

Colin said some of the items he found were “incredible”, adding: “It’s these personal items that really spark your imagination when exploring a home like this.”
